Very balanced take, Mark. As always, you injected some humor which is nice.
I can say that Senator and soon to be Guv Tuberville was a tenant of mine during his last two years at Univ of Cincy. He mailed it in, because no head coach gets home at 5:30 on a Wednesday during the season as his landlord is replacing a sink disposal. He asked me what he should do: ESPN for 17 weeks at $350k or Guv at 110k (this was back in 2017). I replied, do you have a burning desire to help the people of Alabama, improve opportunities, education, business climate, etc.
He dead-panned “No”. Took the job at ESPN, got fired for messing up players names, and ended up running for Senate when Doug the Dem was up for re-election.
When I mailed him his deposit check, it went to Santa Rosa Beach, FL.
I detest the phrases "working across the aisle" -- I mean, shouldn't we get rid of the aisle? -- and "clear-eyed and commonsense," which typically mean neither is accurate. The only "clear eyes" I know are the team slogan on Friday Night Lights: "Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose." Maybe that should be the plan.
A brave foray into politics, wish you luck!
Excellent work, Mark!
