Only two years ago Cincinnati made the playoff out of the American Conference. I would consider them a David. They proved themselves over 13 games. My point -- which, I think, was strengthened by all the great games Saturday -- is that we now have a great regular season, in which everything is at risk every week, and at least one great game among the 3 playoff games and sometimes three. College basketball has been enormously devalued by its watered-down regular season. I'd prefer that it didn't happen to football.

Get what you're saying, but 4 team is a detriment to all the small schools. You call them imposters but David's deserve a spot too, perhaps fueling them to become a Goliath. The scenario you spell out only happens if both these teams are having outstanding seasons.

Nice piece

But a true playoff is overdue.

We have a true playoff, with great semis and finals since they instituted it. We also have the best regular season in sports. Next year we'll have five or six imposters in the playoffs, and we'll have a regular season that will look almost as meaningless as basketball's. Penn State is #11 right now and would be in a playoff. No high-quality win.
