When it's Parker's moment at Cooperstown, and he's not there, someone should just read this to the baseball family.

This is the best distillation I have ever read about Parker's impact on his teams and on the game.

He's always been the go-to word association when "1979 All-Star Game" is mentioned. But this brought so much more to the picture of Dave Parker.

Oh, one thing. It was Brian Downing who Parker gunned down at the plate. Not Lee Mazzili.

Great column on Dave Parker. A writer friend of yours, Jim Salisbury in Philly, told me about your superb writing and analytical skills and I've been reading you for the last year. I trust you wrote a column about Dick Allen when he made the Hall of Fame after he died. I grew up watching Allen hit gargantuan homers over the left field roof in Connie Mack Stadium. Then in the mid-'70s when a very good Phillies team came along, we found out what a good man and class act Dick Allen was.

Great piece. Dave Kindred said it well below (as is usually the case, right?). I hadn't known or recalled that Parker used to talk to FRobby and Vada outside Crosley. What a great legacy. Thank you.
