Powerful piece. I choose to take a “glass half full” approach, though, because the alternative is too awful to contemplate. I would note, in any event, that most of this country had no problem with Hitler’s treatment of the Jews in the 1930’s and that lynchings happened in the lifetimes of many of us, so we’ve survived worse. What the midterms suggest is that our institutions are still strong enough to resist extreme attacks on our democracy. Whether this continues to be true remains to be seen, but so far so good.
