Timmy loved to tell the story about Oscar Gamble during exhibition season. Someone asked Oscar if he was playing that day. He said, "They trying to win, ain't they?"

Deion Sanders is also the guy who is effectively taking away the scholarships of most of the Colorado football team so that he can replace them with his pros. Once a jerk, always a jerk. But Tim McCarver was anything but.

As usual, the best McCarver piece written in the last two days. So happy to see Whitey and Harry mentioned here. Didn’t see it anywhere else. I think Whitey rubbed off on him, letting the game breathe, chiming in when warranted.

I last saw McCarver at the Yankees Tampa stadium. They were playing the Phils. I was working for the Newhouses and had great seats because their cable company had stadium naming rights. McCarver had his young grandson with him (Beau?). Tim had only recently retired. He was proudly introducing the kid to Charlie Manuel. He was very happy. Charlie, of course, fawned on the young fellow.

I know McCarver was a Cardinal. But I remember him as a significant Phillie. Aside from Carlton, knocked in the final winning run at Connie Mack Stadium. Oscar Gamble scored.

He was one-of-a-kind analyst. The kind that helped you love the game.

Another really great piece. I was big fan of McCarver as a player and a broadcaster. “That was a Linda Ronstadt fastball: Blew by you!” As a switch-hitting catcher, I emulated his lefty stance. Alas I didn’t get 1500 hits in my life. RIP
