I really dislike arbitrary limits. I like the pitch clock and hate over side bases. I like the shift limits and hate the ghost runner. I would prefer the old NL rules. I like pitchers who go 9. I’m old and overly traditional. But arbitrary innings requirements are not a good concept.

I think you nailed it, Mark. For me (and I’m sure for most fans, at least the older ones), the marginalization of the starting pitcher has diminished the game significantly, and I’m desperate for a solution, but the law of unintended consequences can’t be sidestepped; situations like the circumstances that you describe are likely to occur often.

So, the intent, right or wrong, is to get everything perfect in the game? It appears the Commish, with this new rule possibly in place, is determined to keep Tommy John's name in lights. There once was a head coach in the NFL who mentioned to me that a new rule was idi-------otic! Now there is a word that fits Manfred new scheme of managing all 30 of the Major League's pitching staffs.
